Is there any way of knowing the source of our ideas? Is there any way in influencing how we respond to them?

In his “Spiritual Exercises”, St. Ignatius develops an incredibly rich yet simple doctrine on the discernment of spirits which can be read in their entirely here. If you have taken the Spiritual Exercises, you know how important these rules of discernment can be.[2] For the purposes of this short blog, I’d like to summarize the main principles to help us keep this fundamental rules top of mind in our daily and more serious discernments.

First, we need to be aware of what is the state of our soul. There are really only two options: either I am striving to do good and avoid sin (albeit with various levels of intensity) or I am carelessly falling into sin with no effort to get myself out of it. Depending on our state of soul, the devil will respond in different ways. To the one in sin, the devil will “support” and encourage him to continue on his path to destruction, while the good spirit (God or His angels) will prick the conscience through reason to show them the error of their ways. For the one who is striving to grow in holiness, it is the exact opposite: the devil will try to confuse and lay obstacles while the good spirit will try and encourage us.

We must then be aware of the notions of “consolation and desolation”. It is important not to confuse these with mere emotional states. Consolation is not the excitement we have when we get a new job, win a sporting event, or accomplish some task we have been seeking. In a state of consolation, we are inflamed with a love of God and a desire to do His will, whereas in desolation we find ourselves in a state of spiritual dryness, often plagues with doubts, fears, and tension. The rules of St. Ignatius depend entirely on which state we find ourself in.

And now to the heart of the rules: what must I do?

The Calling of Matthew, Caravaggio

If we find ourselves in a state of desolation, we must first follow the golden rule: DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES. This is perhaps the fundamental rule. If I have made a good discernment, and decided to do something, and then find myself in a state of desolation, this is not the time to make any changes. Rather than give in to the desolation, we must fight against it with prayer and good works. We ought to consider that God, who has providence of all things, is permitting this for some good reason (for example, to grow in our faith), and that at some point the darkness will pass. I must continue on the path and put my faith in God.

On the contrary, if we find ourself in a state of consolation, that is, “all interior joy which calls and attracts to heavenly things and to the salvation of one’s soul”, then we must first humble ourself and give thanks to God, aware that this is an unmerited grace totally beyond our control. This can also be a good time to see where God is calling me.[3]

It is also important to be aware of the general tactics of the devil. St. Ignatius characterizes the devil as a coward who runs at the first sign of strength (while pouncing on weakness); a general (who ‘prowls around’ looking for our weakness), and a licentious lover, who seeks to seduce in the shadows and not have his deceiving tactics be made known. Our response must be then to respond with strength against the devil’s cowardliness; to examine ourselves to find any weaknesses and strengthen against his attacks, and to make known to a confessor or spiritual director any serious temptation. Often the simple act of bringing to light a temptation can cause the devil to flee.

Our life is a struggle (cf. Eph 6:12), and we must continually fight against temptations and seek to do the will of the loving God who made us. Perhaps one of the best ways for us to grow in our discernment is the “renewal of our minds” (cf. Rm 12:2), where we seek to see reality through the lens of the Gospel. Through meditation on the word of God, a life of prayer and frequent reception of the sacraments, we can be better equipped to know the voice of God. Some of the best areas in scripture for this are found in 1 Corinthians 13 (on charity) and Galatians 5 (on the fruits of the Holy Spirit).

We know too that the devil can present himself as an angel of light (cf. 2 Cor 11:14), and so St. Ignatius provides additional rules to help guard us against these attacks. These rules are worth viewing in their entirety, and we are always helped by revealing our soul to a confessor or spiritual director to help understand whose voice we are listening to.

In short though, it is important to remind ourselves of the truth that God is of peace (cf. 1 Cor 14:33), and He operates in peace, not in the “wind, earthquake, or fire” (cf. 1 Kings 19). If we let the “same mind be in us that was in Christ Jesus” (cf. Phil 2:5), we can come to know His voice and be able to better discern His loving will for us.

May we follow the example of Mary, who at the voice of the angel “pondered” (cf. Luke 1:30) what this might mean, that we too might be able to say “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38).

[1] Ven. Why focus on trust? Recently we have been focusing on self-knowledge and conquering our dominant fault. As we are all called to be saints, we must learn to strive to concretely practice virtue in our daily life. Striving for holiness is far more than just praying all the time. If you are falling into the same sins over and over again; having a hard time following through with your resolutions; caught in indecision; or often put off the good you could have done: don't be discouraged! If you feel like you are stuck in mediocrity and want to act according to the greatness you know you are called to: don’t be discouraged! Of all the virtues we could turn to, it is a time to take a deeper look at trust.

Trust is the underlying principle in which marriages, friendships, families, societies and even our relationship with God is founded upon.

Our notion of trust begins as a child in the womb. Nurtured and fed, held and taken care of, an infant lovingly depends on its mother for everything. Trusting is natural, what is learned is distrust. The youth give hope to the world through their childlike trust, for as one gets older and experiences failures and disappointments it becomes difficult to depend on others. We've all been wounded by those who stopped trusting us, and by those who we put our trust in and have let us down.

Here are some images we can think of as we discover what true trust is. Trust is a commander in the army who advances because he knows that his unit will have his back. Trust is a little girl who is afraid, and courageously jumps down from a tree into her father’s arms. Trust is a mountain climber descending from a mountain, relying on his rope. Trust is when you are in the confessional and you tell the priest all of your sins. We can notice that trust is not passive. One is able to take the leap of faith, the risk, because they are relying and depending upon another.

When Adam and Eve fell, they were tricked by the serpent to distrust God and His goodness. Through sinning, “man tempted by the devil, let trust in his creator, die in his heart” (CCC #397). Thus, all sins result from a lack of trust in God who will provide for all that we need. Scripture teaches us where to put our trust. We hear, “Trust in the Lord and he will help you” (Prov. 20-22), “O Lord of hosts, happy are those who trust in you!” (Ps 84:13).

Trust is related to three virtues: faith, hope, and magnanimity. Trust springs from faith, and is strengthened by hope. One can tend toward valiant efforts because they have trust, for fears are diminished and expelled from the soul. The more you trust in God, you can let go of the comforts of the world to truly do His will.

The principal aspect of trust is relying on another. Yet how do we trust, even on a natural, human level? Trust depends on the way you view the person who you believe can help you, and the way you view yourself. Firstly, you perceive that this person has the abilities, qualities, resources, and experience that can assist you. It also requires that you perceive this person who you trust in as one who wants to help you. This can be difficult because we can fall into putting our own faults and failures onto another. Perhaps we personally struggle with being on time, or returning phone calls, or listening to the needs of others. Then we begin to see those around us as always being late, or failing to get back to us, or failing to listen. We can even put our own faults and failures on God: God never listens to my prayers, God never gets back to me, or God is always late.

Prayerfully examine how you perceive those around you, those whom God has put into your life to support and guide you, and how you perceive God Himself.

Secondly, trust depends on yourself. You perceive yourself as needing help, and you allow others to see that you need help. This is going to require humility. We cannot do everything on our own. Although the world puts pressure on you to be self-sufficient, carry your own weight, and do things on your own, that is not how God made us. God made us as creatures, endowed with an intellect and a will, made in his own image. Creatures that must depend upon a creator. God delights in us when we turn to him, and when we realize we need Him. Although it will feel like a humiliation to reveal your weakness, pain, and misery to another, there is a secret waiting for you if you dare to take a step towards trust. Jesus says, “let the little children come to me” and “unless you turn and become like children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” This invitation to trust, is an invitation for God to be your Father and for you to be His child.

Restoration in Christ: Restoration of the Human Person

https://www.vocesverbiusa.org/blog/restoration-in-christ-restoration-of-the-human-person

https://www.vocesverbiusa.org/blog/restoration-in-christ-restoration-of-the-human-person#comments

Christian Life

Christ the King

Restore

Sr. Mary, Star of Evangelization, SSVM “Restoration” of itself implies two things: an original order and a subsequent disorder. Without providing too many statistics or meticulously interviewing many different people, I assert without fear that all would universally agree that we dwell in a state of disorder. A being unique in all of creation, a composite of body and soul, one with the animals and one with the angels, created for perfect union with God but debased through his own free choice and thus a lonely wanderer, groping in the dark, weakened, and dominated by his disordered passions.

Man has faculties (or powers) that pertain to the two parts of his one composite nature. The spiritual powers of man’s soul, his intellect and will, were meant to have precedence, to be the guides on his journey. Their perfection is his perfection. He likewise possesses faculties proper to his animal component, for our purposes identified in the passions, the emotions, or the appetites.

The object of the intellect is Truth, reality: things as they are. The object of the will is the Good, a rightly-ordered possession of the being of things. The appetites are given that the whole human person, body and soul, may participate in his experience of reality. They are necessary for the performance of a fully human act.

Man, in his original ordered state and in his current disordered state, possesses these faculties by nature. The disorder is found in the reversal of the hierarchy, in man’s being “flipped upside-down,” as it were. The intellect ought to lead, providing the light of truth to the will, that it may give itself to what is truly good. The emotions are meant to be subject, handmaids of man’s spiritual faculties, accompanying man’s free choices, that he may delight in Truth and Goodness.

Man's Faculties

Object

Type

Intellect

Truth, reality,
things as they are

Spiritual

Will

Good, a rightly ordered possession of the being of things

Spiritual

Emotions (Passions, Feelings)

Sensible good / Difficult good

Sensible Appetite

The spiritual powers of man’s soul, his intellect and will, were meant to have precedence, to be the guides on his journey. It stems from our modern view of reality which has each generation pushed God further away from both from an intellectual and cultural point of view. Modern philosophy[4] has rejected God as the transcendent Creator and Lord of the universe and instead elevates man and his freedom as an absolute value. This way of thinking has led to moral relativism, where each has their ‘own truth’ with no objective moral norm with which to judge actions as good or evil. In the early 20th century, these ideologies led to unprecedentedly cruel totalitarian groups such as Nazism and Communism, leaving untold destruction and horrors in their path.

In a world that has rejected God entirely, we can expect nothing but the discord, confusion, and culture of death in which we find ourselves today.

While regimes have come and gone, the ideas of moral relativism have continued to permeate in our world creating havoc and destruction in society, the family, and individual persons. It is only through Jesus, His words, actions and very person that “man is given the possibility of "knowing" the complete truth concerning the value of human life”[8].

But as we have seen, the world has discarded Jesus, who is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (cf. Jn 14:6).

And hence, in order to battle the spirit of the world (cf. 1 Cor 2:12), we must seek to “renew all things in Christ”[9].

We must “restore all things in Christ”[10].

And what is the way to do this?

I highly advocate reading chapter four of Evangelium Vitae where St. John Paul the Great shows how we can build a new culture of life. Here, I will present just three principal ways JP2 recommends for establishing a culture that is renewed in Christ: preaching, celebrating, and service of charity.

To build a culture of life...we must “restore all things in Christ”

Preaching - "That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you" (1 Jn 1:3)
“To proclaim Jesus is itself to proclaim life” (EV 81). We most promote the dignity of the human person made in the image and likeness of God. Above all, we most proclaim the core message of the Gospel, that our God is a living God, close to us, who loves us dearly and wants us to be with Him forever. The lofty vocation for each man and woman is to partake in the divine nature by grace (cf. 2 Pet. 1:14). We must also not be afraid to speak and witness to the fact that this truth, that human life, a gift from God, is inviolable and sacred, making abortion a grave evil.

Celebration - "I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made" (Ps 139:14)
“To celebrate the Gospel of life means to celebrate the God of life, the God who gives life” (EV 84). Based on a spirit of prayer, we must celebrate with great joy the gift of life and redemption that we have been given by God. This can also be done in public demonstrations, such as peaceful prayer at abortion clinics or by attending the March for Life. Above all, this is to be celebrated in the day-to-day actions of our life, through a spirit of self-giving love for others.

Serving the Gospel of Life - "What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works?"
